Do This If You Don't Have Money To Advertise
If you are strapped for cash and want a way to reach out and connect with people, you need do only one thing.
Create Valuable Content!!!!!
That’s right! I am talking about social media posts, emails, videos, pictures, education, and entertainment. Make it and give it away!
I am going to start off by making some bold and true statements.
- The Internet has changed the way that people consume information.
- Information is more readily available than ever before.
- People producing the information are positioning themselves in a place of power.
- Information is currency.
How awesome is that!?
Let me explain: back in 1996 my good friend, Bill Gates (ok, we are not actually friends) wrote an article titled “Content Is King”. He talked about the future of the Internet as being place where content creators could make money. He was thinking about Magazine publishers transitioning what they do to the World Wide Web, but there is a sentence that really stuck with me as I was reading through his article:
If people are to be expected to put up with turning on a computer to read a screen, they must be rewarded with deep and extremely up-to-date information that they can explore at will. They need to have audio, and possibly video. They need an opportunity for personal involvement that goes far beyond that offered through the letters-to-the-editor pages of print magazines. – Bill Gates “Content Is King” 1996
Every time you click on an article, read a blog post, open an email, like a social media post, or watch a video, you are consuming content. In many cases, this content is produced by a business. This business is using content as currency.
Still following me?
This is important to you as a small business owner because currency is exactly what you lack. You have a small (if existent) marketing budget and need to invest wisely, which is why I suggest investing in content. In many cases, you can create it yourself or within your team.
By using content the right way, you will do something that every good businessperson knows is essential to growing a business – BUILD TRUST.
Without trust, you have no hopes of being successful in business long-term.
Trust = Power
“But Shannon, I don’t feel very powerful writing emails and scheduling posts on Facebook” you say.
I hear you! And I am here to help. Think about building a relationship with your customer. How can you help them? How can you serve them? How can you solve their problems?
A few months ago, I wrote a blog post How to Write A Month’s Worth of Email Marketing Content In An Hour (Or Less). You can click over and read that gem if you missed it, but more importantly, I now have a printable worksheet to help you create awesome emails by creating valuable content.
Download it here and get to work using your power to build trust and relationships by delivering great content.
